  2. Review

A New Journey Begins
Lizel accepts a new escort request and sets off on another journey as an adventurer.

Kindness as Strategy: Lizel’s Philosophy
This chapter begins with Lizel outlining his personal belief in what he calls “bonding through kindness.” He theorizes that by giving others exactly what they need—be it affection, attention, or reassurance—they will naturally develop fondness toward him, much like imprinting. It sounds calculating, but for Lizel, it's simply part of his sincere nature. He never fakes his feelings; he just understands people exceptionally well.

The Escort Mission
Lizel and Gil accept an escort request from Judge and head toward the merchant kingdom of Marquade, traveling in Judge’s luxurious carriage made from dungeon-forged wood. It’s durable, lightweight, and remarkably comfortable—a far cry from the standard adventurer fare.

During their journey, they’re attacked by monsters. Lizel calmly draws his magic gun—a weapon that uses mana to fire bullets and suppress recoil—and shoots with deadly precision. The firearm requires immense concentration and multitasking ability, yet Lizel makes it look effortless. When Judge marvels at the weapon, Lizel plays it off as “a rare model,” and Judge accepts the explanation without suspicion. Gil, watching from the side, notes how easily even a sharp appraiser can be deceived by Lizel's composed demeanor.

Judge's Hospitality
Later that night, Judge treats them to an almost royal banquet pulled from a magically enchanted trunk: fine dining, elegant furniture, and high-quality service, all in the middle of nowhere. Lizel takes it in stride, but when Gil jokes, “You’re weak when people cry, aren’t you?” it reveals how often Lizel is swayed by emotion despite his aloof exterior.

Marquade and Merchant Lords
Upon arriving in Marquade, Lizel immediately immerses himself in its rich commercial atmosphere—especially the bookstores. A self-confessed book addict, he often reads late into the night and has a magical pouch stuffed with unread volumes. Thankfully, he’s learned not to buy out entire shops anymore.

Meanwhile, Gil reflects on Lizel’s habit of doting on capable young men like Judge and Studd. This, he suspects, stems from Lizel’s time as a royal tutor. His former pupil—the current king—was also an insatiable reader. For Lizel, pampering talented youths seems almost like a reflex.

Later, they meet Judge’s grandfather Insai, a sharp and influential merchant-lord who rose from humble beginnings. He adores Judge and asks Lizel to look after his grandson. In exchange, he offers another lavish carriage. Lizel hesitates but can’t resist Insai’s pleading eyes: “How could I say no when he looked like that and cried?”

Crowds, Confrontations, and a Calculated Encounter
The city of Marquade is bustling, and Lizel is clearly out of his element in large crowds. Gil acts as his guide, subtly parting the flow of people with his presence alone. Lizel, meanwhile, immediately spots a pickpocket and shuts it down with practiced ease—something that impresses even Gil.

Soon after, a man mistakes Lizel for a high-handed noble and picks a fight. Gil intervenes, making the man back off with a single glare. But Lizel deliberately draws the confrontation out—waiting for someone. Gil later realizes it was a strategic move to set the stage.

An Audience with Count Shadow
That “someone” is none other than Shadow, the ruler of Marquade. Lizel greets him with a smile—and immediately demands dinner as compensation for being mistaken for him and dragged into a trouble. Shadow has already been warned by Viscount Ray, who sent a single message: “Do not make an enemy of him.” Though skeptical, Shadow is caught off guard by Lizel’s affable attitude.

Lizel reveals he identified Shadow during the earlier scuffle—by analyzing how people around him behaved. Though the count is unsettled by Lizel’s insight, Lizel simply states he’s here for sightseeing. Shadow isn’t sure whether to believe him, and Lizel’s playful demeanor only makes him more uneasy.

Closing Moments
It’s also made clear in this chapter that Lizel has no romantic interest in women—a rare but direct moment of personal revelation. And when city guards arrive to investigate the earlier incident, Judge scares them off with surprising authority, reinforcing just how powerful his family is.

Review
I think this story has a gentle atmosphere, but there's a unique sense of tension running underneath it.
Lizel, is a polite and mild-mannered noble, but at his core he's extremely calm and strategic. He's highly perceptive and has a talent for seeing through people’s hearts. By giving them exactly what they want, he naturally draws out their trust and affection.

Lizel’s “kindness” may look calculated, but strangely, it doesn’t feel unpleasant at all. In fact, it even feels sincere and makes him all the more charming.

Thanks to Lizel’s skill in winning people over, the story naturally builds a network of relationships centered around him. Right now, the main characters are:

Judge: A good-natured but slightly timid shopkeeper. The way he slowly grows closer to Lizel while being gently spoiled is heartwarming and adds a healing touch to the story.

Studd: A cool and stoic guild staff member. He’s friendly toward Lizel, but openly shows disgust toward Eleven, which makes his emotional expressions unexpectedly human.

Gil: Lizel’s closest companion. Though usually silent and composed, he’s the only person Lizel shows his true self. When he asks Gil for help, it’s not as an order—it’s more like a request. There’s a subtle “I can’t relax without you” kind of air between them that’s irresistible.
